HIP Animals

HIP Animals, according to Liz

1. Black Panther. HIPpest animal I know. If I ever have to get back as an animal I want to be a black panther. They can run, climb and swim….. Only catching other animals wouldn’t really be my thing…..
2. Horse. My favourite animal. Especially the baroc Andalusian and Lusitano and the English Thoroughbred. They are smart, understanding and sensitive animals and they served us for a long time, till we switched to more horsepower.
3. Zebra. Almost the same as a horse, but a little bit different…… Like their stripes…
4. Dolphin. Besides really cool animals, also very smart animals. I went swimming with them in Cuba. Although it must drive them crazy to do all the time the same thing, they looked excited to “work” with people and being petted.
5. Giraffe. Actually I really started to like the giraffe after a visit to the Zoo of Emmen as a child, where a giraffe gave me the possibility to scrub his head. There tongue is a bit “rough”, but there long neck, small head and long legs makes them very HIP.
6. Kolibri (don’t know the English name) If you see one “eat’ you just have to look
7. Penguin. They walk so funny! And after seeing the move Madagascar, they are even funnier….
8. Orca. Once heard the story that two Orca’s tried to save a human being, but they were a little rough while playing with it. They were throwing with the human being like we do with a ball….the human being did not survive it… I don’t know if it is a true story, but I would love to see one in real.
9. Flamingo. They look a bit odd with their long thin legs, but their colour is so cool.

HIP Animals, according to Anna:

1. Parrot: with their beautiful colours and the fact that they can ‘talk’, cool to imagine how they fly around in the jungle with a lot of them.
2. Giraffe: they have a funny face and I like the pattern of their skin. Since years I have a puffed giraffe animal which is very cute.
3. Penguin: also funny, when I see them walk I always have to laugh because it looks so weird. They look beautiful with the black and white
4. Zebra: Just a nice pattern
5. Turtles: My brother used to have 2 turtles, they were very cute.
6. Monkey: especially the ones which look a bit like human beings, I don’t know their names. The baby monkeys are so sweet.
7. Dolphin: very very smart. Free Willy... Whales are also very interesting, impressive.
8. Lion/tiger: Have to mention a scary animal too. These show so much power, even when they sleep.
9. Elephant: Could not be missing here.
10. Butterfly: the ones with nice patters. The animals they were before they turn into butterfly are also funny, I don’t know the name. The transformation phase is very interesting
11. Tropical fishes: with all their beautiful colours. Too bad I can’t dive and don’t dare to and I’m not so good at swimming under water as well, so I haven’t seen that much tropical fishes when I was in Curacao.

HIP music instruments

HIP music instruments, according to Liz
1. Saxophone. A good saxophone player can make this instrument the sexiest sound in music.
2. Violin – maybe on the first sight not the HIPpest instrument, but it has I just love the sound of it. It can by classic, but can also rock.
3. Bagpipe. Not an every day music instrument, but I always love to hear the sound. Gives me chicken skin. Not for every day by the way.
4. Guitar, acoustic. But only for a person who can really play, and not someone trying to play at the campfire (although that can be nice as well)

HIP Music Instruments, according to Anna:

1. Saxophone: I think there’s no need to explain, sexy.
2. Piano: I’m always jealous to people who can play the guitar very well, it’s romantic and just beautiful
3. Mouth Organ: just funny, but can sound very nice, for example together with guitar music
4. Guitar: Nice blues on an acoustic guitar.
5. Tooter: ?? Don’t know how to explain, not a trumpet but something like that with which the ‘Last Post’ is played

HIP coaches

HIP Coaches, according to Anna:

1. Jose Mourinho (soccer, Chelsea): one of the first moments I heard about him, I thought it was an asshole, because of his behaviour towards Frank Rijkaard. But actually I don’t really know what it was all about. And then I saw him during the Champions League. The incident when he wasn’t allowed to sit besides the field during the match. He’d got such a punishment before but then he managed to communicate with his assistants by cellphone or something like that. So this time everybody was alert, but he wasn’t even in the stadium. I still wonder what he did this time to have contact with his assistents. I’m sure he’d done another funny trick. Heavenly funny, I love this ‘recalcitrant’ behaviour. Besides this, he’s also just a good coach, helped Porto and Chelsea back to the top and gave Robben all the trust he needed during his injuries.
2. Bart Schouten (icespeedskating, USA): HIP because he made a speedskating country of the US and because he looks hip (for his age..).
3. Frank Rijkaard (soccer, Barcelona): with his relaxed attitude, he made an incredibly good team of Barca, which is able to beat the golden players of Real Madrid. Had been a good player and a great coach of the dutch national team as well. He made one of the best teams in years, but had some trouble with penalties...
4. Flavio Briatore (F1, Renault): Maybe not really a coach, but well. I like the italian, a little bit of mafia, style, that specific attitude which I can’t describe, and the way he managed to make a very good car for Fernando Alonso and give him all the trust to go for it. (just forget all his mistakes with Naomi Campbell etc.)
5. Marco van Basten (soccer, dutch national team): Although a lot of times I really don’t understand his decisions, he still proved to be right, and that’s the hip thing about him. He created a very young and talented new ‘Oranje’ and had the courage to say goodbye to oldies Davids, Kluivert and Seedorf. He’s right about that, but I still don’t get the ‘van Bommel’ decision... We’ll see. Finally become world champion??
6. Jacco Verhaeren (swimming): the driving force behind the many (olympic) victories of Pieter van de Hoogeband, and also former coach of Inge de Bruyn.
HIP coaches, according to Liz

1. Frank Rijkaard. He was a good soccer player, he fitted in every team he played, his biggest mistake as coach of the national team was quitting after the team lost in semi – finals, and now he is doing a marvellous job at the Barcelona soccer team. I think he will be a big one, the first of a new generation of great coaches (together with Van Basten, Ronald Koeman and less good Gullit). He mostly looks really calm and does not fear trying something new.
2. Sjef Janssen/ Anky van Grunsven. Anky van Grunsven is not only the best horseback rider of the world right now, she also trains a few of the best horseback riders, and upcoming horseback riders. Her husband, Sjef Janssen is her trainer and rides her horses when she is not able to ride (broken leg, pregnancy). He made her the best of the world (besides her own qualities).
3. Gerard Kemkers. Speedskating coach of the TVM team. Last Olympics his skaters scored enormously, and in 2004 Renate Groenewold was the first female Dutch Worldchampion Long distances(at least in ages).
4. Marco van Basten. He had the change to become one of worlds best soccer players (I think every soccer fan knows some of moves) but has to stop his career because a bad ankle. In first instance he did not wanted to be involved in anything that was related to soccer. This made him look around. After some years he followed a course for soccer coach and now he is the newest coach of the Dutch National team. (and pretty successful till now)
5. Bart Schouten. The second speed skating coach. Scores good results with most of his skaters. Probably going to TVM after the Olympics.
6. Jacco Verhaeren. Swimming coach of Pieter van de Hoogeband (and others)
7. Arsene Wengen. Coach of Arsenal. Lots of soccer players who did not really succeed in other teams (Bergkamp and van Persie)

HIP songs, part II

HIP songs part TWO, according to Liz

Oke, still at least 40 songs in my favourite list so the next ten are easily filled.

1. Clocks – Coldplay. Most people I know like this song. I can listen it a thousand times and still like it.
2. Lovefool – the Cardigans . I bought the whole Romeo and Juliet soundtrack cd especially for this song.
3. Supergirl – Reamonn. I guess everybody knows it, but I really started to like it after I heard it in the TV show Starmakers. It is a beautiful song. For every moment of the day.
4. Why does my heart feel so bad – Moby. I actually like the whole CD play, but this one is the first one that came to mind.
5. No regrets – Robbie Williams. It was hard to choose one of his songs. I also like Road to Mandelay and Angel.
6. Run baby run - Sheryl Crow. Pain, power and guts are the first things that come to mind.
7. Senorita - Justin Timberlake. I think his music is hip. I don’t need to hear it every day, but once in a while I can really enjoy it.
8. Foolish Games – Jewel. A classic one as well.
9. Europe – The final Countdown. It remembers me of my time in San Diego, and the moment we (three friends and I ) returned to the USIU campus after spending five days in a car, turned on the volume with The final countdown on the radio and made an extra round over the campus before getting out and going back to usual business.
10. Maroon 5 – Sunday morning. I think I will still love this one in about ten years…..and the song is totally HIP
11. Kaileigh – Marillion. I am not sure if it is HIP, but it is beautiful and timeless.
HIP songs II, according to Anna:

In this second edition of HIP songs, I selected a lot of ‘older’ music. But still, the list is not complete...

1. Lynard Skynard – Sweet Home Alabama: This song reminds me of sitting on a terrace of ‘de Stulp’, a bar in Renesse which I visit a lot during summertimes. Just relaxed.
2. Rory Gallagher – Going to my Hometown: cool blues, he plays the guitar awesome.
3. Golden Earring – Another 45 Miles: Of course, also a dutch band can make good music. A beautiful song.
4. Everly Brothers – Bye Bye Love: is the original from the Everly Brothers? Simon&Garfunkel? Or just the Beatles? I totally have no idea. Anyway, I love it. I had to play it on the mandoline when I was about 10 years old...
5. Maná – Rayando el Sol: Spanish popmusic, for warm summernights.
6. Drifters – Save the Last Dance for Me: Really, really old, but I like a lot of old-fashioned things. It’s just the idea about the cute ways things went those days. Old-fashioned is HIP.
7. Scott McKenzie – San Francisco: imaginations of living in the ‘hippy’ era.
8. Dune – Are You Ready to Fly?: Youth sentiment, happy hardcore. This song, and Nakatomi’s ‘children of the night’ were my favorites. I always listened to it before i went out. That is, we went with the ferry to the village on the other side of the river, visiting ‘Disco Love’. Got home before midnight because otherwise you missed the last ferry of that day.
9. Beach Boys – Kokomo: For the tropical, happy summer touch of this music edition.
10. Candy Dulfer – Lily was here: instrumental, saxophone

HIP: Holland goes red

61.6 % of the Dutch vote AGAINST. Only a very few places where the majority voted 'yes'. Posted by Hello

HIP- not so HIP May

HIP/ not so HIP May, according to Anna:

HIP
1. The visit of President Bush in Limburg on Memorial Day:
Although this 60th memorial day of the people who died in World War II is of course not a happy fact, I do appreciate the visit of the president of the USA. Instead of almost all dutch people, I don’t hate this man THAT much, and his presence on this important day was a very positive action of him. Especially for the dutch and american veteran soldiers and the relatives of the citizens who died.
2.Liberation Day: 60th celebration of the liberation from WWII, always very special, with lots of concerts throughout the country. Also Prince Willem-Alexander who replaced his grandfather Prince Bernhard at the ‘defile’ of veterans.
3. Alonso’s 4th victory: at Nürburgring/Germany this time. Thanks to Raikkonen actually, his crash in the last lap, due to big trouble with the tyres. But that’s the way F1 is. Now it’ll be very difficult for the other drivers to beat him in the fight for the World Championship.
4. The starting of Roland Garros: every year this is a fantastic tournament, exciting matches, great players especially from Spain and Latin-America, and the perfect weather.

Not so HIP
1. Laetitia Griffith leaves parliament and becomes alderman in Amsterdam: we don’t have much good politicians in the Netherlands. Lots of them are old people who keep having this job without doing anything special. Griffith was one of the not so much very good young politicians, who’s specialized in subjects of justice. She was on the list of the VVD and was elected 2 years ago. And now she prematurely leaves! I don’t think this is fair towards the people who voted for such a person. There are more members of the VVD who did this before. It’s a shame. Don’t tell me there aren’t appropriate other candidates for the Amsterdam-vacancy.
2. Onur Air: this Turkish airplane business wasn’t allowed to fly to the Netherlands anymore because it was unsafe. People who booked a holiday to Turkey got into trouble. Some even had to fly back with another company, to Belgium, while their car was parked at Schiphol, Amsterdam. The stupid thing is that after a while they were allowed to fly again, yesterday there was proof they’re still unsafe.
3. Yes-campaign of politicians for the European constitution: a shame how the politicians threatened the citizens for not voting against the constitution. They gave us the chance to vote by a referendum, so except the result. But beforehand they already told us over and over again that a ‘no’ would mean war, disaster and so on. They spent millions on this propaganda, and it’s their own fault it didn’t turn out that way (but more about this in june’s report). The citizens don’t want this big Europe.
4. The naturalisation of Salomon Kalou: this soccerplayer of Feyenoord wants to get the dutch nationality as soon as possible. But there are thousands of other people who also want that. The reason that he’ll be important for the dutch national soccer team is insane, because we have enough other good players. Kalou just has to wait. Very dumb of all the soccer ‘analysts’ who wanted to convince the minister of this ‘importance’. Actually it’s HIP of minister Verdonk that she didn’t collapse because of all the stupid pressure.

HIP/ not so HIP May, according to Liz

HIP
1. Liberation Day and the defile of the Canadians who visited Apeldoorn. It was an impressive event, not only because it was 60 years ago that they set us free, but alos because it might have been there last visit.
2. Liverpool wins the Champions League and beats Milan. Who would have ever thought that?
3. Alonso’s fourth win in the Formula 1 of this season. As Raikonnen crashed, the change he will be the next World Champion is getting bigger.
4. I booked my ticket to Buenos Aires. It took a while and it will take a while before I go, but that I go is fur sure now.
5. The french vote NON.

Not so HIP
1. A lot of people died in Iraq. It is like violence never stops over there. Last monthe the deathrate was higher than ever.
2. the naturalisation (or not) of the soccer player Kalou. Like we would become world champion with him. If he wants to become Dutch in three years it is early enough ( I don’t believe that he will still be living in the Netherlands in three years, and if so, he probably isn’t as good as “we” think he is).
3. The Dutch Yes campaign in favour of the European Constitution gets a bit dirty and politicians start to threaten the people who want to vote against it with war and an even worse economic situation then we have right now.
